News from the College Principal, Mrs Janelle Newman

Dear MacKillop Families,
As I reflect on Term 3, I marvel at the multitude of opportunities and lived examples of our students, staff and wider community living our vision of inspiring the hearts, minds and spirits. One highlight was our annual Father’s Day breakfast – it is always fantastic to see so many families joining us and spending time together with our students – a great community-building event. Our Year 5, Year 7 and Year 12 students all participated in their respective Year Level Leadership Retreats. These retreats offer our students a Christ-centered experience of our faith, that inspires them to lead with humility and compassion, focussed on Mary MacKillop’s example of service to others.

In Week 6, I had the opportunity to attend the 2025 Australian Catholic Education Conference along with 1400 other delegates. With the theme ‘hope, anchored in faith’, the conference focused on the strategic vision and mission of Catholic education. Held right here in Cairns, it was the first time that this Triennial event has been held outside of a capital city. The conference had some well-known educational speakers. I found the keynote by Professor Dylan Williams on teacher mastery and shifting our focus from how much students learn to how much time is needed to reach mastery very insightful. I also gathered ideas from Dr Steve Constantino who charted a vision for engaging every family in the educational lives of their children, and enjoyed Sr Nathalie Becquart’s vision for preparing our students to bear witness to hope in our ever-changing world. There was also a great presentation that explored the complex challenges and rich opportunities for learning presented by Artificial Intelligence.

Last week was National Child Protection Week. It is an annual awareness campaign to prevent child abuse and neglect, and remind all Australians of our responsibility to keep children and young people safe and free from harm.
At MacKillop, we endeavour to create a nurturing environment where our feel safe and can thrive. We have 4 College Counsellors who support our students on a daily basis, and Behaviour and Engagement staff in both the Primary and Secondary campuses that work with our students to develop their social-emotional skills and safeguarding processes. I have included posters below that outline who these people are. Students can seek support from their class teachers, these Student Contacts, or from any staff member of duty during breaks (they will be wearing yellow vests) if they need support.

One of the most frequently reported causes of emotional harm emanates from social media use. We have a duty of care to our children to monitor online time and activity. The College has recently restricted access to YouTube and Spotify as these platforms have been found to contain inappropriate messages and videos. Students can access quality learning content from these platforms, and as determined by their teachers, through their CANVAS subject pages or teacher Powerpoints.
Our Whole College focusses over the last 2 fortnights have been Gratitude and Being an Upstander.
Gratitude: Students were challenged to take time to reflect on all the good things in their lives; to notice when someone does a good deed and thank them for it. Research confirms that being grateful on a regular basis is good for your and others wellbeing.

Being an upstander: Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another by placing yourself in their shoes. Compassion involves a deeper response and includes both feeling for them and wanting to help, to take away whatever is making them feel sad, hurt, helpless. It takes courage to be an upstander. Upstanders are people who do something that prevents or reduces the unkindness they see.

The highlight of the term to date has definitely been our inaugural Year 12 Formal dinner. It was a truly historic moment celebrating not just a milestone in the life of our College, but more importantly the incredible journey of a remarkable group of young people: our first Year 12 graduating cohort. Even though I have only journeyed with this cohort for the last 3 years, it is a night of deep pride and heartfelt joy for me as College Principal.

Kind Regards.

Dear MacKillop families
As we come to the end of what has been a very productive and rewarding ten weeks, we would like to thank you for your ongoing partnership and support this term. Our students have continued to display their personal best and engage in rigorous learning and extra-curricular activities that have been opportunities for each child to reach their full potential.
This term we have much to be grateful for. We are very blessed at MacKillop to have a comradery of staff who go above and beyond to plan and organise events for our students. This term, our Frist Nation students from Year 5 and 6 were fortunate enough to attend the Junior Indigenous Youth Parliament with Ms Cahill. A group of our Year 6 students participated in the Opti-Minds challenge with Mrs Caferra and Mrs Burgess. All with great success! Thank you to Ms Simone Cahill, Mrs Emily Caferra and Mrs Catherine Burgess for your time and effort in making these events possible.
Our College celebrated Science Week in style, with our Primary students showcasing their scientific skills with an expedition of amazing experiments. A huge thank you to our families who supported their children in making this event so successful. It was a wonderful opportunity for parents to share a learning experience with their children.

We had a fabulous turn out for our Book Week parade this year. We are incredibly grateful for the effort that all our students and staff made to celebrate literacy at MacKillop. It was evident that our cohorts had worked hard on practising their poem to share with our community. It was also fantastic to our Kindy friends join us for the parade.

This term, we started our ‘Buddy Program’ in our Primary sector. Our students from Prep to Year 6. Our older cohorts buddied up with a younger cohort to mentor and build imperative relationships. Over the term, our buddy classes worked together on creating activities for NAIDOC week, Science Week and R U Ok day. This has provided a lovely opportunity for our younger children to identify older peers within the playground and throughout the College grounds.
Every morning, Monday to Thursday, Mrs Kello has been running a morning reading program for selected students to have an extra opportunity to practice their reading skills. Fortunately, we have some excellent Year 5 and 6 leaders, who tutor our tutees. It is through this program that we have seen so much growth and confidence shine for our younger students. For reading, our approach is systematic, focusing on the key areas of Phonological Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. In the early years (Prep to Year 2), students concentrate on Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Vocabulary, using a resource called Get Reading Right. As students’ progress to Years 3 to 6, they focus more on Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension, having already mastered decoding skills.
As we come to the end of the term, we also acknowledge the sporting events that have taken place over the last 10 weeks and commend our students for their sportsmanship and good standing in attending these events. Mr McGilvray has consistently acknowledged how well our students have demonstrated the MacKillop dispositions when representing our college. Thank you to Mr McGilvray for your tireless effort in organising and leading these events throughout the year.
I hope the holidays are an opportunity for you to spend some quality family time with your children and prepare for a wonderful Term 4. Have a safe and relaxing break.
Kind Regards,
Caitlin O’Meara

Dear MacKillop Families,
It is hard to believe we are already nearing the end of Term 3. This term has definitely been busy one in Secondary with both students and staff involved in many events from academic celebrations to community events. Please read on for an update on all these exciting events that have been happening in the Secondary Sector!
Subject Selection Evenings
Our Years 8 and 9 Subject Selection Evenings were a great success, with strong attendance from families across all year levels. It was a fantastic opportunity for students and parents to engage in meaningful conversations about future subjects and career options with external providers and teaching staff. It is wonderful to see our students excited about their potential career prospects and pathways. These evenings are such an important part of the academic journey, allowing students to make informed decisions about their future pathways and we thank you for your continued support.
Academic Awards
We also celebrated the achievements of our students at the Academic Awards Assembly, where we recognised those students who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to their studies. It was a joy to see so many students acknowledged for their hard work, and we are incredibly proud of the academic culture that continues to grow at our College.
A particular highlight this term has been the extraordinary achievement of our Year 12 students, who received excellent confirmation results from the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA). These results are a testament to the perseverance, focus, and resilience of our senior students, as well as the dedication and support of our teaching staff. To see such strong outcomes at this stage of the year is both affirming and inspiring. It sets a powerful tone as we head into the final term of their schooling journey.

Year 11 Leadership
This term also marked the beginning of the Year 11 leadership process, with students submitting applications and delivering speeches for leadership roles in 2026. We have been deeply impressed by the maturity, unity, and sense of purpose shown by our Year 11 cohort. They have demonstrated what it means to lead with integrity and care, and we are excited to see them step forward and embrace the responsibilities of leadership in the coming year.
Reports
As we wrap up the term, student reports are currently being finalised and will be published at the end of term. We encourage all families to access these reports through the MYCE app and to take the time to review them with students. These reports provide a valuable opportunity to reflect on progress, celebrate successes, and identify areas for growth. As always, we welcome open communication. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to teachers to discuss students’ learning journey. These conversations are vital in supporting each student’s development and wellbeing.
As we head into the upcoming school holidays, we wish all families a safe, restful, and enjoyable break. Thank you for your continued support and partnership throughout the term. We are so proud of what our students have accomplished this term and look forward to welcoming everyone back for a strong and successful Term 4.
Wishing you all a safe and restful holiday.
God Bless,
Melissa Headridge

Religious Life of the College
Term 3 has truly been a term of service, celebration and outreach Term at MacKillop Catholic College.
Term 3 and 4 Charity Focus – Cancer Council and St Vincent de Paul
Term 3’s charity focus is the Cancer Council. Thank you to our Hospitality Department for kick-starting our fundraising with the Biggest Morning Tea at the Athletics Carnival last term. The fund and awareness-raising has continued throughout the term – in particularly through the promotion of sun-safe practices, our participation in Relay for Life and our wear yellow for Daffodil Day fundraiser. A truly amazing effort by all involved! We look forward to channelling our energy into learning about and raising funds and awareness for the St Vincent de Paul Society in Term 4.
Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop Feast Day
On Friday 8th August we celebrated the Feast of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. This is the pinnacle of our liturgical calendar – and was marked by a full day of activities for our community, including Feast Liturgies, year level service activities and games, and culminated with our inaugural Hopeful Hymn Competition. Our College spirit shone brightly and much fun was had!
Australian Catholic Education Conference Mass
We were very proud to have some of our student leaders taking on key roles at the ACEC Mas earlier in the term. This year marks the first time that this conference has been held in Cairns – and our leaders collaborated with consultants from Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns to co-create the Prayers of the Faithfull. All students proudly represented the College when they led this important part of the mass. The ACEC formation event and mass was a truly uplifting experience for all!
Year 12 Legacy Builders Retreat
In Week 7, our Year 12 Cohort participated in the Legacy Builders Retreat, held at the Cairns Colonial Club. This formative experience focussed on the legacy that the cohort has and continues to build as our first graduates at MacKillop. It involved a combination of spiritual, reflective, team building and challenge-based sessions. Our Year 12 cohort made many treasured memories during this significant experience.

Year 5 Courage to Lead Retreat Day
In Week 7, our Year 5 Cohort participated in their Courage to Lead retreat day at Seville Mercy Conference Centre. The aim of this significant day of spiritual and formative activities was to prepare the students for their leadership journey in Year 6. The Year 5s participated beautifully in this formation experience – and learnt many things about their leadership style, servant leadership and how to work together as a cohesive team.

Year 7 Never See a Need Retreat Day
Our Year 7 cohort participated in their Never See a Need Retreat in Week 9. Held at Seville Conference Centre, this this retreat focussed on service and outreach. The students began their day reflecting on their God-given gifts and how they can use them to serve others before unpacking the concept of empathy as a motivator for service. We were also joined by Jamie Wanders – the FNQ Youth Engagement Officer from St Vincent de Paul Society, who shared his knowledge and wisdom with us on how to take action through St Vinnie’s in our local community. A wonderful day was had by all!

God bless,
Anna Harris

Dear Parents and Carers,
Term 3 Reflections: A Season of Growth, Connection, and Achievement
Term 3 has been an incredibly busy and fun-filled time at MacKillop Catholic College. Many of our Years 7- 9 students have been enjoying the thrills of the Junior School Sport (JSS) competition, while others in the college continue their dedication to classroom endeavours. Our staff work hard in creating an environment of fun, fairness and formation. A place where students can thrive in their learning while still enjoying the social elements of connection and play. With a strong focus on student wellbeing and values, this term offered powerful opportunities for students to reflect, reconnect, and grow — especially through key events like the Year 7 Retreat Day and the Unleashing Personal Potential (UPP) days for Years 8 and 9.
Celebrating Milestones: The Senior Formal
A significant highlight this term was the celebration of our senior cohort's formal, a night that marked not just the nearing end of their school journey, but also a moment to celebrate community, friendships, and achievements.
Held in the company of their families, the evening was filled with elegance, pride, and a sense of occasion. Students arrived dressed in style, and the atmosphere was one of warmth and celebration. It was a special opportunity for families to share in this important milestone, recognising the hard work, resilience, and growth their young people have shown over the years.
Academic Progress and Personal Growth
In classrooms across the College, Term 3 brought focus and momentum. Students engaged with new content across all subject areas, developing their knowledge and skills while refining their study habits and resilience. Teachers created dynamic learning environments that encouraged curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
Years 8 and 9: Unleashing Personal Potential
Our Year 8 and 9 students took part in the energising Unleashing Personal Potential (UPP) days, focused on the theme of connectedness. These dynamic and interactive sessions were designed to strengthen students’ relationships with their peers and themselves.
Through team-building activities, guided reflections, and practical leadership challenges, students explored what it means to truly connect — not just socially, but with purpose and integrity. The sessions encouraged them to develop their communication skills, build empathy, and appreciate the value of positive relationships within the school environment
Beyond the Classroom
Wellbeing continued to be a strong focus across the school. Initiatives such as R U OK? Day, peer mentoring, and house challenges reminded students of the importance of mental health, checking in with one another, and building a supportive school culture.
Looking Ahead to Term 4
As we prepare to enter Term 4 — the final chapter of the year — we do so with confidence, gratitude, and momentum. Final assessments, celebrations, and farewells await, and we are proud of the growth our students have shown this term.
We thank all families for their continued support and partnership. Wishing everyone a safe, restful, and well-deserved break.
Kind Regards,
David Christopher

Dear MacKillop Parents and Carers,
Caring for Our College Community
At MacKillop Catholic College, the wellbeing and safety of every student is at the heart of what we do. We are deeply grateful for the support of our families in helping us create a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for all. With this in mind, we would like to gently remind families of a few important practices:
Parking and Bus Zones
Our bus zones must always remain clear to ensure students can travel safely to and from the College. Parking in these areas not only carries legal consequences, but also prevents buses from safely collecting and dropping off students. If you are collecting your child from Reception, we kindly ask that you use the College carpark. This small act of consideration makes a big difference to the safety of our young people.
Collecting Students During the School Day
We know that sometimes students need to leave school during learning hours, and we are always here to support families when that happens. To help us care for your child and minimise disruption to the learning of their classmates:
- Please let the College Office know as early as possible if you need to collect your child. You can call the College directly on 07 4081 7600 or email – mountpeter@cns.catholic.edu.au
- Primary and Secondary students have different timetables, and many enjoy learning and playing in various areas of the College, which can make locating them challenging at short notice.
- Advance notice allows us to prepare your child calmly and respectfully, while ensuring other students’ learning continues uninterrupted.
- Giving advanced notice also ensures that your child is at the office with all their belongings ready for pick up when you arrive.
Respectful Communication
As a Catholic community, we strive to live out the values of Mary MacKillop by treating each other with kindness, patience, and respect. Just as we teach our students to speak to one another with care, we ask that the same spirit of respect is shown in conversations with staff. Together, we can model for our young people what it means to build a community of dignity and compassion.
Thank you for partnering with us in the care and growth of your children. You support helps us ensure every student feels safe, respected and valued at MacKillop Catholic College.
Kind Regards,
Rebecca Flockhart

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Hello MacKillop families,
Historically, Term 3 is the busiest time of the school year, and this has certainly been the case in the Religion department. At the time of writing, our students are all working incredibly hard to complete their Term 3 assessment. In our Junior Religion space, our Year 7s are comparing the Abrahamic religions; our Year 8s are examining patterns of change and continuity in the Church; and our Year 9s are delving into the spiritual writings of religious leaders. In Religion and Ethics, our Year 10s are planning a project to celebrate religious diversity; our Year 11s are connecting the United Nations sustainable development goals to religious teachings of peace; and our Year 12s are finishing their Catholic Faith in Action course.
Beyond engaging in their classroom lessons, this term has also seen our students participate in Catholic Education Week, the St Vinnie’s Sleep Out, our Mary MacKillop Feast Day celebrations and our Rosie’s outreach. Next term, there will be further outreach opportunities for our Years 10 and 11 students – watch this space to see what exciting things unfold!
I wish all our students and families a blessed holiday break, and look forward to working with the hearts, minds and spirits of our wonderful young people in Term 4.
Yours in Faith,
Juliana Oswell

SCIENCE
Greetings Science families of MacKillop,
A short and sweet issue. Between editions we have had Years 8 into 9 subject selection as well as Year 10 into 11 subject selection events that have been well attended by parents and carers. In the interests of this I have attached a 2025/2026 Science Subject Landscape that outlines the subjects, electives, topics and assessment types that exist currently in our great College from Years 7-12.
Last year I sent this out in an email, but we have had staff come and go for a variety of reasons and this version will be the most current. The topics and assessment types are designed for students to experience with the intention of it increasing in complexity as they progress through the years, until they become our seniors.
Speaking of which, by the time you read this we would be completing our Year 12 Mock External Exams and celebrated our first ever Year 12 Formal. The students have been keeping us informed of their attire, rides and celebration plans for this milestone event almost against our will, however we certainly have shared their enthusiasm. With these events out of the way though and core memories created we can knuckle down again soon to prepare for external exams and graduation.
As always all of the science staff are an email away, me included.

Yours in Science,
Andrew Hislop

Energy Entries
Ciana W – Artist Statment
Did you know over 40% of the ocean’s surface is covered in pollution? This often goes unseen, yet it is a suffocating reality that threatens not only marine life, but us. My artwork Nets Entangle explores the destructive impact of pollution on Earth’s ecosystems. Its focus is a turtle entangled in ghost nets, symbolising the threat we pose to marine safety. This piece invites reflection and reminds us of our collective responsibility to the Earth and aims to provoke both action and empathy.

Skye B - Title: Plastic Tide Medium: Mixed-Media – Artist Statement
‘Plastic Tide’ explores how, as humans, we often separate ourselves from nature, forgetting that everything we do comes back to us in the cycle of life. If we nourish plants, they nourish us. If we preserve reefs, they protect us. If we litter, we poison the oceans and skies that give us life, harming wildlife and humans. If nature suffers, we do to. The plaster figure reaching out shows society’s desperate cry for help. The reef on the goggles represents what we have already destroyed, urging us to act before it’s too late.

Ayuri Z - Year 10 – Veins and Roots – Artist Statement
'Veins and Roots', is about how people can grow in so many ways. Everyone has unique qualities that make them special. Just like nature, we change, grow, and sometimes face tough times. My art shows that even when life gets tough, we can learn from our mistakes and become stronger. The flowers, plants, and vines in my work symbolise how we can keep growing and improving ourselves. I want to send a message of personal growth, perseverance, and encouragement. Veins carry our blood, and roots absorb water and nutrients, showing the connection between humans and nature.

Liya M - A Soul’s Journey Oil and Acrylic Painting – Creative Generations Paperwork – Artist Statement
A Soul’s Journey’ explores life after death, new beginnings, growth, and transformation. The anatomy and withered hand symbolize despair and death, but through poetic lenses, flowers entwine the darkness and begin to blossom. The work echoes the soul’s rupture through nature, bordering spiritual realism. It reminds us to acknowledge the future, not just the past. The soul’s journey moves through darkness toward a season of joy, where life erupts and reconnects with what was lost.

Jakaiya B – Title: The Caught Barramundi – Fishing net tied to a metal wire frame – Creative Generations Paperwork – Artist Statement
The mass dumping of commercial fishing nets and plastics is a global issue that affects everyone. This waste is often forgotten and discarded in our oceans. The Caught Barramundi, is a totem to many First Nation people. This sculpture explores how harmful marine waste is, not just to the ocean but to all the beautiful creatures in the ocean and on Earth. By repurposing ghost nets, tennis rackets and plastic bottle tops, I aim to call people to action, it is an opportunity to open our eyes to the consequences of human impact and to inspire change.

Brayden B - Year 11 - Parrot within the Garbage – Artist Statement
Parrot within the Garbage' symbolises how when people throw away rubbish, they also abandon a part of nature. Inside the garbage bag is a tiny world, like a mythical fairy garden, being lost forever. The giant mushroom shows how this small garden is rotting faster, just like our planet is accelerating in global warming. The parrot was made to create sympathy, as most people wouldn’t throw away an animal. The torch helps the audience to explore a hidden world, lost in the dark and buried in trash.

Kind Regards,
Traylea Sexton
Leader – Head of Creative Industries

TECHNOLOGIES
Exciting New Subject Offerings in Design & Engineering
From 2026, our Technologies department will be expanding with the introduction of new subject offerings in Years 9 and 10. Students will now be able to choose from Engineering Principles, Textiles, and Industrial Technology (wood and metalwork), giving them more opportunities to explore hands-on, creative, and practical learning pathways.
These new electives will allow students to build important design and problem-solving skills while working on authentic projects. In Engineering Principles, students will explore design challenges and prototyping, while Textiles will provide opportunities to learn both hand and machine-sewing skills in a creative context. Industrial Technology will allow students to develop workshop skills and confidence while building projects from wood and metal. Together, these subjects provide a strong foundation for pathways into senior studies and future trades, design, or engineering fields.
There was huge interest in these new subject offerings from both parents and students at our Information Night in Week 8, where the future of Technologies at the College was showcased. We are very excited to introduce these subjects in 2026 and look forward to watching our students thrive in the expanded Technologies program.

Year 9 Design Technology – Ugly Dolls Textiles Project Update
Our Year 9 Design Technology students have made fantastic progress in their Ugly Dolls textiles project, and the results so far have been both impressive and inspiring. Every student has successfully developed and applied a variety of hand-sewing techniques, including the running stitch, backstitch, and blanket stitch, as well as learning how to sew on buttons and add embellishments to personalise their designs.
It has been wonderful to watch students refine their skills with growing confidence and creativity. The Ugly Doll project has provided the perfect opportunity for them to not only practise technical sewing, but also to showcase their individuality through fun, quirky, and imaginative designs.
We are fortunate to have such fun and creative students here at MacKillop, and this project has been a clear reminder of the talent and enthusiasm they bring to the Design Technologies learning area. We can’t wait to see the final collection of Ugly Dolls, each one a unique reflection of its creator.

Year 7 Design Technologies – Speed Racer Project
In Year 7 Design Technologies, students have the opportunity to design, prototype, refine, and put their creations to the test. And what do they make, you ask? Speed Racers!
Each racer is built to meet a set of key design criteria: it must travel in a straight line, move quickly, be aerodynamic, move forward efficiently, and of course — look deadly. Students use their creativity and problem-solving skills to design and build their racers, then put them to the ultimate test in racing challenges.
It has been fantastic to see the excitement, creativity, and budding engineering skills on display as students launched their racers and evaluated their success each term. The level of enthusiasm and energy in the classroom has made this project a real highlight for both students and teachers.
Well done to all of our Year 7 students and to Mrs Sweetnam for guiding them through this exciting project!

Certificate II and III Hospitality – Paddock to Plate Coffee Tour
Our Certificate II and Certificate III in Hospitality students recently took part in the Tablelands Paddock to Plate Coffee Tour, a private food tour showcasing some of our amazing local producers. This excursion provided students with valuable hands-on learning experiences that will help them build practical skills and work towards completing their course requirements.
Students enjoyed gaining insight into the coffee roasting process, from bean to cup, and discovered how ice cream and other dairy products are created with care and expertise. The tour highlighted the importance of local food production and gave students the chance to connect classroom learning with real-world industry practices.
It was a fantastic day filled with learning, tasting, and connecting with the region’s vibrant food industry. A huge well done to our Hospitality students for making the most of this unique opportunity and representing MacKillop so proudly.

Kind Regards,
Lorena Goodall
Leader – Head of Technologies

HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Dear Parents and Carers,
From an expectations perspective, our non-negotiables in HPE remain entrenched moving forward:
Students must wear their sports uniforms on dedicated practical days assigned by their teachers. Students are also expected to participate to the best of their ability regardless of context (practical or theory). Failure to follow these basic expectations will result in detentions (lunch times and potentially after-school for repeats).
Students have attended excursions throughout this term for curriculum purposes. Some of these included our Year 10 Sport and Recreation prep students attending a day trip to the Arrow Tracks at Mt Whitfield. On the day, they participated in hiking, tent set-up and bushwalking etiquette practice. Outdoor education and team building has been a large part of the applied senior curriculum in semester two.

Our Junior Secondary topics for this term included puberty, understanding sport and health related fitness strategies, fostering respect and resilience, exploring motor learning skills in sport, and making health-conscious choices. Students also explored body image, positive and negative relationship traits, sports psychology and training.
Our Year 11 Sport and Recreation students have studied ‘Challenge in the Outdoors’ which included preparation for the day trip excursion and creating some ‘how to’ videos in authentic scenarios. Year 12 Sport and Recreation students have studied ‘Coaching and Officiating’. Year 11 Physical Education students have studied ‘Sports Psychology’ while completing a folio. Year 12 Physical Education students have studied ‘Energy, Fitness and Training’ while completing a folio and preparing for their external exams.

Our curriculum this semester has equipped our students with success in empowerment and personal growth.
Please feel free to reach out to myself or any of our wonderful staff if you have any questions regarding Health and Physical Education at MacKillop Catholic College.

HEAD OF YEAR
Year 7: Lee Staddon – lstaddon@cns.catholic.edu.au
Dear Year 7 Families,
We’ve reached the end of Term 3! It’s been another big term for our Year 7s — full of reflection, celebration, creativity, and community spirit. Here is a look back on the highlights and a sneak peek at what is to come in Term 4.
Year 7 Retreat — “Called to Serve”
Our Year 7 students recently attended their retreat day at the Seville Mercy Centre, with the theme Called to Serve. The retreat was a chance for students to step away from their daily routines, and take time for reflection, relaxation, and encounter with God
The day encouraged students to:
- Think about what they can personally offer others.
- Understand that empathy motivates service and that we are stronger together.
- Live out service as action, kindness, and community contribution.
With prayer, group activities, and guided reflection, students returned from retreat with a deeper sense of belonging and commitment to living The MacKillop Way.
Book Week 2025
This term we also celebrated Book Week, where the theme centred on fostering a lifelong love of reading. Students were encouraged to dive into new genres, share recommendations, and of course — get creative with costumes!
Book Week is not just about dress-ups; it is a reminder that reading builds imagination, empathy, and critical thinking. Our Year 7s embraced the celebration, bringing energy and colour to the day.
St Mary MacKillop’s Feast Day
On 8th August, the College celebrated the Feast of our patron, Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. For Year 7, this was a day immersed in service, prayer, and activities.
Highlights included:
- Service: Cleaning J Block lockers and creating Sun Safety Awareness Posters linked to this term’s Cancer Council charity focus.
- Community Celebration: Joining the Secondary Liturgy in the Primary MPC, a time of prayer and reflection.
- Hopeful Hymn Competition: A joyful College tradition, with students showcasing spirit, teamwork, and creativity through music and song.
The day beautifully captured Mary MacKillop’s legacy of service and her motto: “Never see a need without doing something about it.”
Looking Ahead — Term 4
We finish the year with a short but action-packed Term 4! Key upcoming events include:
- Award Presentation Evening.
- Year 6 Shadowing Program — Year 6 students will spend time with Year 7s to prepare for their transition.
- Year 6 into 7 Transition Day — welcoming our incoming 2026 cohort for a full day of Secondary school experience.
Thank you for your continued support throughout Term 3. It has been a privilege to watch our Year 7 students grow in confidence, community, and character. We look forward to finishing the year strongly together in Term 4!
Warmest Regards,
Lee Staddon
Head of Year 7

Year 8: Michael Johnstone – mjohnstone@cns.catholic.edu.au

Year 9: Adam Vander Zant – avanderzan@cns.catholic.edu.au
Dear Year 9 Families,
Term 3 has been a busy and rewarding term for our Year 9 students. With so many opportunities for learning, growth, and connection, the cohort has continued to show resilience, maturity, and enthusiasm as they take on new challenges both inside and outside the classroom.
A highlight of the term was Unleashing Personal Potential Day, where students engaged in activities designed to strengthen teamwork, build confidence, and encourage self-reflection. This program helped students explore their strengths, set meaningful goals, and consider how they can positively contribute to their school community. It was a valuable day that gave Year 9s the chance to step outside of their comfort zones and develop a stronger sense of purpose.

Another significant milestone this term was the Year 9 into 10 Subject Selection Night. This afternoon/evening provided students and families with important information about pathways into the senior years, helping them make informed decisions about their learning journey. The night encouraged students to consider their interests, strengths, and aspirations for the future, as they begin to shape their senior school experience.
Throughout the term, students have also worked diligently across their subjects, building on key skills in preparation for their senior years. Their efforts in the classroom, combined with their involvement in extra-curricular activities, reflect their growing independence and commitment to their learning journey.
As Term 3 draws to a close, we congratulate Year 9 on their achievements and encourage them to continue striving for their personal best in the final term of the year.
Kind Regards,
Adam Vander Zant
Head of Year 9

Year 10: Graham Sunners – gsunners@cns.catholic.edu.au
Dear Year 10 Families,
The second half of Term 3 and the Year 10’s are continuing their careers journey, with subject selection now complete it was time to find out where their qualifications could take them. This time the whole cohort had a day out at the Cairns Careers Expo at the Cairns Showgrounds. Their visit was a huge success as the students fully engaged themselves in all the stalls on show. Many of the exhibitors commenting on how well they conducted themselves and how invested in what was on display the students were. Many of the students taking home a lot of useful information brochures and free merchandise. As Head of Year, I was immensely proud of the students’ efforts.

As we come to the end of Term 3 the students are already thinking about the start of Term 4 when the End of Year 10 Dinner will be taking place. This is a chance for the cohort to come together and celebrate the achievements and successes of the past year, a chance to get dressed up and let their hair down, instead of being told to tie it up or tuck your shirt in lads.
Catholic Education Week showcased the performing arts talents of the cohort where they performed My Lighthouse fully complete with actions and energy. A truly awesome performance by the whole team. As part of the week the students paid back service to the College community and tidied up the College oval to make it free from rocks and any tidied garden beds.

Finally, a shout out to the amazing Year 10 Pastoral teachers who greet the students every morning with positivity and provide guidance setting them up ready to be successful during their classes.
Have a wonderful break Year 10 you have earned it this term.
Kind Regards,
Graham Sunners
Head of Year 10

Dear Year 11 Families

Over the holidays, I encourage you to take time to rest, recharge, and enjoy moments with family and friends. Step away from study for a while so you return refreshed and ready to achieve your best.
I look forward to welcoming everyone back safe, rested, and ready for a fantastic Term 4.
Warm Regards,

A Night to Remember: Inaugural Year 12 Formal Dinner
On Friday 12th September, MacKillop Catholic College proudly hosted its Inaugural Year 12 Formal Dinner, a truly memorable celebration honouring our foundation graduating class of 2025. Held in the elegant Urchin Room at the Reef Hotel Casino, the evening was a beautiful reflection of the students’ journey, their legacy, and the community that has supported them every step of the way.
From the heartfelt Acknowledgement of Country led by our First Nations students, to the partnered dances showcasing weeks of practice, the night was filled with laughter, pride, and joy. The event featured a reflective and inspiring speech from Mrs Janelle Newman, our College Principal and I struggled to keep my emotion in-check delivering my speech to the group, touching reflections on our Year 12 cohort’s growth and achievements.
Guests enjoyed a delicious three-course meal, photo opportunities, and a light-hearted awards ceremony that celebrated the unique personalities and quirks of our Year 12 students. The evening concluded with a ceremonial cake cutting, a parent-child dance to finish (one of my favourite moments on the evening), laughter, tears and plenty of fun in between.
We extend our deepest thanks to all who helped bring this special night to life—staff, photographers, venue personnel, and our dedicated College administration team. A heartfelt thank you also goes to our families, guests, and most importantly, our Year 12 graduates, who made the night truly unforgettable.
We look forward to celebrating with you again at Graduation Day in a few short months.
Warm Regards,
Alice Reilly
Head of Year 12
LIBRARY NEWS
BOOK WEEK - Week 6
The Secondary Library was definitely the place to be during Book Week with a huge week-long celebration. We had an Escape Room, UNO tournament, Caterpillar Racing, a collaborative jigsaw puzzle, competitions and finished with our Dress Up Parade on Friday.
It was rewarding to see so many students get involved, with 80 students through our Escape Room and another 90+ students playing in our UNO tournament. 20 book reviews were received, and 20 students completed our 'passport' competition requiring participation in all activities over the week!
We were very impressed by our well-read and organised Escape Room winners. Although only in Year 7, they managed to beat several Year 12 teams. Seeing so many students and staff dressed up as book characters on Friday was a real hoot! A big thank you to Mrs Weston for all her hard work and creativity in organising and running our first ever Escape Room, UNO tournament and Passport.

Please remember that due to severe allergy and health reasons MacKillop is a NUT AWARE College. Please be mindful of this when packing your child/ren’s lunches.
Your co-operation and support in this matter is appreciated.
Student Absence – Late Arrival – Early Departure
Student Absence/Student Absence Process
Any absence from school should be for one of the following reasons (as outlined by the Education Act 2006 and Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) Assessment Guidelines):
- Illness
- Medical related procedures
- Misadventure (accidents)
- Family tragedy (including Sorry Business)
Parents/carers whose children are absent from school are asked to contact the College Office by Telephone 4081 7600, Email studentabsent.mcc@cns.catholic.edu.au or Parent Portal/MyCE App before 8:30am if possible. If a student has not arrived for class and the College Office is not aware of the student’s whereabouts, parents will be sent a SMS text message to their mobile phone (to the Main Contact as nominated on the Enrolment Form). It is the responsibility of the parent/carer to then inform the office immediately of the reason for the student’s absence.
A Notification for Student Absence form should be completed for an absence that is greater than five consecutive school days. Please email this form to the College office studentabsent.mcc@cns.catholic.edu.au
Parents/carers are asked to advise the College Office and Classroom Teacher via Email in the event of a multiple day absence, so it can be recorded prior to the date of absence.
If the absence is for a medical reason for three or more days, a medical certificate is also requested.
If the absence is for representative sport or cultural events, please send an email to the office and attach a copy of the relevant TCS/competition forms.
If a student is unable to then attend sport trials/cultural events, please email the College office so attendance records can be updated.
PLEASE NOTE:
If an absence from school is approved for students in Secondary, the following documents will be attached to the College approval email, and will need to be completed and returned asap.
Years 7-9 Application for Assessment Extension form
Years 10-12 Application for AARA (Assess Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments – Illness and Misadventure – Confidential Medical Report) form which is a requirement of QCAA.
Late Arrivals
If a student arrives at school after 8:30am and before 9:00am, they are to enter via the Main Gate and register their late arrival at the Secondary Library and receive their late slip to hand to their classroom/homeroom teacher.
Early Departure
Students are not permitted to leave the College grounds during school hours unless accompanied by a parent/carer. Prior notification must be given if a student needs to leave the College during the school hours. This can be communicated via email studentabsent.mcc@cns.catholic.edu.au and copied to the College Office. Parents/carers must report to the College Office to collect and sign out their child. If leaving for an appointment and returning, students must be signed back in through the College Office.

Tuckshop and Uniform Shop
FLORA’s CAFÉ AND UNIFORM SHOP
Exciting News: Introducing My School Connect for Tuckshop and Uniform Ordering!
We have transitioned to a new online provider for Flora’s Cafe and Uniform ordering, and we are pleased to introduce My School Connect as our chosen platform. This user-friendly and efficient system is designed to simplify the process of ordering meals and uniforms for your child, providing a seamless experience for both parents and students.
Key features of My School Connect include:
Online Ordering and Cashless Payments – easily place orders by accessing My School Connect direct from our Parent Portal. Secondary students will still be able to use cash or their own debit cards to directly purchase items from the Cafe.
Menu Accessibility - Access the tuckshop menu online, allowing you to review options and make informed choices for your child's meals.
Order History - Keep track of your child's tuckshop and uniform orders and expenditures through the comprehensive order history feature.
We believe that this transition to My School Connect enhances the overall online ordering experience for both parents and students. Should you encounter any issues or have questions about the new system, please do not hesitate to reach out to the My School Connect support team directly at: https://myschoolconnect.com.au/contact
You will have received emails from My School Connect with instructions about how to activate your account - so please check your inbox. You simply cannot create your own account within My School Connect, they are generated internally by them.
For parents who still use Flexischools for a child at another school, you can simply close the profile of the student at MacKillop. How to close your Flexischools account – click here for instructions
We appreciate your support in making this transition a smooth and positive experience for everyone. Thank you for entrusting MacKillop Catholic College with your child's education, and we look forward to continuing to provide exceptional services.
Safety at MacKillop
Safety remains our key consideration during student drop-off and collection. Please note the following:
- Students are to be dropped only via the door near the kerbside. Dropping via the roadside is dangerous.
- Students in lower Primary levels will not be permitted to walk unsupervised into/through to the carpark to parents/cars.
- Students riding a bike or scooter should follow road safety rules and wear a helmet.
- Student devices such as phones can be especially distracting. Please reinforce with your child/ren, the need to be alert when crossing roads.
- Drive carefully as you enter/exit the College, and follow the correct flow of traffic at all times.
- Be mindful of residents that live around the College.
- Do not use the NO STANDING zone outside the eastern-side of the College entrance – this is an exit pathway for students walking home and driving/parking here puts lives in danger.
Changes have been made in response to safety concerns and to allow for the smooth exit of those families using the College carpark. It could also attract a fine issued by the Cairns Regional Council.
Unfortunately, there continues to be vehicles using this area for dropping off/picking up students. The College will continue to work with Cairns Regional Council and the Queensland Police Service to enforce parking restrictions in this area. The College requests that all families dropping off or picking up children use the carpark and associated load and go areas. By working together patiently we can ensure all students can arrive and depart safely. Your ongoing cooperation is appreciated.
